San’s Adventure

Remember the summers when you were kids and you would dash out on your bike first thing in the morning and come back just as the sun would be setting only stopping briefly for a drink. Well this is what 350 of us from all over the UK, Spain, Australia, South Africa etc came to the seaside town of Whitehaven to do.

We arrived at Whitehaven on a very warm Thursday evening on the 11th July. Paul Bromley, a neighbour of mine, would be joining me for this trip as he did for London to Edinburgh. We registered and cabled tied the race numbers on our bikes, #99 was mine (love that number). All bikes were then stored in a secure compound overnight just meters from the start line.

We headed for the nearest Italian and filled our bellies with a Calzone each.

We were staying at the Travel Lodge in Cockermouth so called a Taxi and made our way. Less said about the Taxi driver and Travel Lodge the better.

Friday 12th July Day 1 Whitehaven to Shap (Lake District)

4.30am start! not sure what I was letting myself in for with such an early get up. The taxi picked us up at 5am and we headed for the start line with one eye open. The seagulls were up and probably wondering why 350 mtbikers were disturbing the peace.

The riders brief had started but couldn’t really hear it due to a poor sound system/megaphone and excited seagulls/mtbikers.

Just after 6am we started a nice steady ride out of Whitehaven on the coastal road. For over an hour we rode along taking in the views and chit chatting about not much. This seemed too easy to say it was an off road event with over 18,000 feet of climbing!

15 miles in and the off road fun started. A cracking climb was about to happen for some of us, but others were already pushing their bikes, it was going to be a long day.

The heat was baring down on us all and de-hydration and lack of pre-training would, for some, be their un-doing. Paul who I was riding with was suffering badly from de-hydration and a lack of fitness. We continued on at a slow pace to reach the half-way point of Keswick for a break and food.

At 40 miles our next stop would be Fairlight Cafe where sandwiches and a can of coke were required. This brought back memories for Paul as it is where he would come with his Dad.

Once we had stuffed ourselves we continued to follow the orange rat race markers. This continued with more off road action just the way I like it. More climbing was involved but this time it was carry/climb which was very painful. As we reached the summit Paul was suffering badly with heat exhaustion and it was only a matter of time before it was game over.

We started a very technical descent which would mean carry/climb I was glad when that was over.

The last climb of the day was heading up on to the moor towards Shap. We followed a dubious looking sign that seemed to point neither straight on or right. Unfortunately we picked the straight on line and managed to head in the wrong direction. This wasn’t a clever thing to do as Paul was exhausted and de-hydrated. We bumped into another 20+ mtbikers doing the same event and we all agreed that we should have turned right at the last marker. So we rode to the marker and enjoyed the amazing downhill that came our way..big kids on bikes with massive smiles.

The final descent to the overnight #pitstop in Shap was the highlight bombing down the vegetation plant was fun!

We were greeted at the finish line by SportTrident and dibbed our timers.

I tucked into Jacket Spud and Veggie Chillie to put the calories back in and waited for Paul.

15-20 mins later Paul arrived broken dropping his bike to the ground and ready to quit.

Game Over…

Saturday 13th July Day 2 Shap to Northallerton (Dales)

Ok Day 2  I was riding on my own, solo, lonerider, billynomates and I LOVED IT!!!!!!!
The most beautiful thing about riding a bike is that its a ‘flight from sadness’ the joy it brings is hard to describe unless you are a cyclist. The weather was perfect we were enjoying one of our best summers since the 70’s (when I was a kid).
As I left Shap at 7am with the others all I could remember was the huge effort that had been required for Day 1. I was hoping Day 2 would be easier and the legs would have time to recover for the massive effort required for the final push on Day 3.
We climbed steadily out of Shap on a quiet country lane and were soon in a field surrounded by some nervous looking sheep.
The off-road section didn’t last long and we were back on the road which would be the majority of Day 2.
I cycled at a steady pace and the legs felt great. The people on the event were friendly and I yo-yo’d with a couple of South African guys called Paul and Jack who I saw a lot of later on. I also met 2 Spaniards who came from Barcelona and loved the fabulous trails the UK had on offer.
I remember one big road climb that would lead me out of the Lakes and in to the Dales where we would reach the top, the sign read ‘Welcome to North Yorkshire’ #godscountry 🙂 The descent after the climb was worth all the effort as it didn’t seem to stop, it went on forever.
This was an easy day I could see the signs for Northallerton and was more than happy that Day 2 was a steady ‘spin your legs’ kind of ride.
I reached Northallerton about 2pm and felt great so headed for a shower and massage.
It was time to head for the hotel, the Black Bull in Northallerton was walking distance. The pub/room was ok. It had clean rooms just a noisy beer garden.
I was knackered so I closed my eyes counted to ten and fell asleep.

Sunday 14th July Day 3 Northallerton to Scarborough (North York Moors)

The final day, what was going to be left in the legs after 2 Days, 12,000 feet,               135 miles?????
As we headed out of Northallerton the mist and grey clouds felt refreshing, as the sun had been beating down on us for the previous 2 days, so some respite was more than welcome.
I knew that all I had to do today was just ‘keep on riding’ and I would be able to see the sea and reach my destination.
The road riding out of Northallerton was steady we rode in a chain gang preserving our energy.
After 8 miles the off road climbing started with a 30% gradient, this was an impossible climb so we were off our bikes and pushing. I remember getting to the top of the moor and feeling completely blown out luckily I had packed a sandwich, some bananas and an apple. I ate all three and was soon back on track. I rode with Jack and Paul and also the two Spaniards who were very impressed with my XX1 set up.
Day 3 riding was up down, up down and across moors, single track and fire road a true mix of fantastic mountain biking.
About 20 miles to go I bumped into Daz from Wolverhampton who I had seen briefly the day before.  He had shot past me on a climb and I remember thinking that for a big lad that guy can climb.
We rode the last 20 miles together and the conversation flowed. I loved his accent he was an excellent rider and a top guy.
I remember seeing the sign for Scarborough and started my final descent, Daz shot off to the finish line and I enjoyed my last couple of miles wanting to hold on to the magical experience of the last 3 days.
The event for me had been an epic journey, finding inner strength and knowing that the impossible is possible with self belief and effort.
The people I met along the way I would like to class as my friends, I may never see them again but will always remember Jack, Paul, Daz the two Spainards and the lad on the moor on Day 1 who I gave water to.
Thank you to Rat Race for a brilliant event.
