A perfect singlespeed ride: Bury to Manchester

You can’t beat a crisp, sunlit December day for a singlespeed ride from Bury into Manchester. There’s something about the combination of dry cold air, good company, and scenic trails that makes it unforgettable.

On this particular ride, it was me, Saul, and Ben setting off from Burrs Park. With Saul as our chief navigator, armed with his Garmin, we were in for a treat of a route that had just the right balance of challenge and enjoyment.

The journey took us through Philips Bike Park, along the River Irwell, and through winding woodsy trails, cycleways, and serene canal paths. Each stretch offered something different—a mix of natural beauty and urban charm.

Upon reaching Manchester, our first stop was at Keep Pedalling, a must-visit for any cycling enthusiast. Refueled and refreshed, we made our way back, this time weaving through Salford’s MediaCity and following the river once again.

The 36-mile loop offered so much to see: iconic landmarks like Manchester United’s football ground, the hustle and bustle of the city, and the quiet serenity of hidden trails. It was the perfect way to spend a winter’s day—just friends, bikes, and an adventure to remember.
