A Fatbike Adventure in Northumberland

Moorlands, Mud, and Memories

The anticipation was palpable as we loaded up the van in Calderdale for an early morning departure. Our destination? The picturesque village of Blanchland in Northumberland, the starting point for a fatbike adventure to remember. Three of us set out, joined by Paul and Sally in Blanchland, ready to tackle the rugged trails leading to SIL YHA.

The Journey Begins

The biting cold greeted us as we unloaded the bikes. The headwind was relentless, stinging any exposed skin and making it essential to keep as much covered as possible. Despite the chill, the skies were clear and blue, with no rain in sight—a welcome reprieve for any cyclist. Our route took us across moorlands, winding single tracks, dense forests, and quiet country lanes, showcasing the natural beauty of Northumberland.

The trails were muddy and wet, adding an extra layer of challenge. Fatbikes, with their oversized tires, excel in these conditions, making the journey not just manageable but exhilarating. Spirits were high as we navigated the terrain, eagerly anticipating our first stop which I believe was only 4k away 😉

A Midday Respite in Allendale

By lunchtime, we reached the charming square in Allendale. A cozy teashop provided the perfect setting for a well-earned break (20 miles later). Over steaming cups of tea, hot water, coffee and hot meals, we warmed up, recharged, and prepared for the second leg of the day’s ride. It’s amazing how good food and great company can rejuvenate a tired hungry cyclist.

The Road to SIL YHA

The afternoon ride brought us through the festive village of Haltwhistle, adorned with Christmas lights that added a magical touch to the journey. We stumbled upon BrewBar, a delightfully tiny bar and café that felt like a hidden gem. There, we indulged in coffee and cake, savoring the camaraderie of our group before setting out on the final stretch.

The last five miles were a mix of quiet country lanes and gentle gradients, guiding us to our destination just before dusk. Arriving at the Youth Hostel at 5 p.m., after starting in Blanchland at 9:15 a.m., we were ready to rest and reflect on a day well spent.

Day Two: A Return to Blanchland

The next morning greeted us with a mix of drizzle and grey skies, but as we pedaled through Hexham, the weather transformed. The clouds parted, revealing mild sunshine and lifting our spirits for the ride back.

The return route mirrored the diversity of the previous day—forest roads, undulating country lanes, and, finally, a fast and lumpy descent to our van. The exhilaration of that final stretch was the perfect capstone to our weekend adventure. By 3:30 p.m., we were back, having covered 80 miles and climbed 8,000 feet over two days on fully loaded fatbikes.

Reflections on the Ride

This trip was about more than just the miles or the elevation gain. It was a celebration of the joys of fatbiking—the unique rhythm of riding on oversized tires, the camaraderie of like-minded adventurers, and the thrill of exploring a landscape as raw and beautiful as Northumberland.

No mechanical issues, no mishaps—just good company, stunning trails, and the satisfaction of a challenge well met. Fatbikes truly are a fantastic way to travel, especially when shared with friends who understand the joy of rolling through mud and moorlands together.

A big thanks to all my riding buddies, Saul, Sal, Paul and Ian.

Until the next adventure!
