Singlespeeding in the Quantock Hills: The Challenge of Simplicity
Live and Love to ride….
Mountain biking on a singlespeed setup, particularly with a 32/18t chainring, offers a unique and thrilling challenge. Unlike geared bikes, singlespeeding strips things down to basics—one gear means there’s no switching when the terrain changes. Instead, it forces riders to work with what they’ve got, embracing both the climbs and descents with raw strength and technique. In places like the Quantock Hills, with their rugged terrain and sharp inclines, this setup truly tests your limits.
Riding a 32/18t gearing ratio strikes a balance between climbing ability and speed on flat or descending terrain. It’s tough but rewarding, requiring endurance and careful pacing, especially in the Quantocks, where steep climbs demand bursts of power, and fast descents test your control.
Pairing this with bikepacking adds another layer of complexity. Carrying gear on a singlespeed means not only do you have to deal with a fixed ratio, but you also have to manage the extra weight. However, the simplicity of singlespeeding can be an advantage—there’s less that can go wrong mechanically, which is ideal for long-distance bikepacking adventures.
In racing through the Quantock Hills, with only one gear to rely on, you’ll focus more on your technique, fitness, and determination. There’s a certain purity in this style of riding—it’s you, your bike, and the trails, embracing every challenge that comes your way.
The highlight of my recent 4-day bikepacking adventure in the warm September sunshine was, without a doubt, my Biofit boxer shorts (www.biofitclothing.com). They’ve been an absolute game-changer for active people like me. The comfort they provide while riding is incredible, eliminating the need for padded shorts and making the journey far more enjoyable. Whether on steep climbs or long descents, these boxers offered all-day comfort, allowing me to fully enjoy the beauty of the Quantock Hills without any discomfort or distractions. Truly a fantastic invention for anyone who loves being active!
